Hey, turns out I’m one of the fortunate people who can actually function after getting four teeth removed, so we were able to bring you two timely releases this week. Still can’t eat hard/solid foods yet though. Also, Shinobu is voiced by Shinobu. Think about that for a bit.

As with any cultural festival episode, there are a whole bunch of foods they talk about. All you need to know is that they taste good and have dimensions. Oh, and students can stay overnight leading up to it. I hope you all enjoy the episode I sacrificed my right elbow and wrist for.

The Japanese do what they do best this episode, and rape yet another classic western tale. Originally, the queen is not a witch, was never a witch, never met a witch, and never dressed as a witch. She lived and died as the selfish person she was born as. Likewise, the hunter and the prince are generally not the same person. They also seemed to forget seven rather important characters, who were even in the original Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

Also, we’re having some kind of argument about green tea versus matcha. Matcha is a specific type of green tea powder, prepared in a unique fashion and used in a lot of different types of cooking (and is also Yuu’s favorite flavor). Matcha latte is like a regular latte but made with matcha instead of coffee. In any case, it’s about whether the word is common or not, and it’s in the gray (green?) zone. Whatever.

Several TL notes to be had this episode. Shiso juice is some weird kind of plant juice, yuzu, mikan, lemon, and dekopon are all different types of citrus fruits, antennas and antennae have different and specific uses that we ignore, 痺れる(“shibireru”) means lots of things like “to be electrified”, “to go numb”, and “to be excited”, so we did our best with a particular double meaning (Sakura Trick really likes those), you should know what a “test of courage” is already, and I think that’s it. As usual, most of these you should be able to understand from context.

Supplemental: Some people seem to be confused about the umbrella thing. In Japan, writing two people’s names under an umbrella with a heart on it is similar to writing two people’s names inside a heart. They find it romantic to share umbrellas when it rains and such. And just in case you’re still confused, I <3 You = I <3 Yuu (there will apparently be more English jokes later, so stay on your toes).

Hey, what happened to that show with the straight people?

Hey, what happened to that show with the straight people?

Just as we originally and solely promised, Sakura Trick episode 1! And with that, we have officially started the winter 2014 season. Trigger warning: if you don’t like hand holding, this is not the anime for you. Uh, a couple notes I guess? First, sakura is the Japanese (i.e. original) name for cherry blossoms, which are a symbol of Japan, and associated with spring and the beginning of a new school year. Yuzu is the name of a character, and also a citrus fruit (you’ll notice various references to this in the background if you pay attention). There’s an obvious reference to Pocky (the weeaboo snack of choice) in the episode, yakisoba are Japanese fried noodles (put on bread for some reason as a sandwich), and against all odds Haruka and Yuu’s names are right after each other in both Japanese and English (provided nobody’s inbetween). “Tokutouseki” (translated as treasured spot to fit the joke) literally means “special seat” or “reserved space”.

If you’re a fan of Shaft and/or Hidamari Sketch, then you’re going to love this. Also, there are some funny coincidences with the seiyuu names as well. I think that’s about it, so hopefully you’re done downloading by the time you’ve read this.

Edit: Very small fixes to v1.5, if you already watched it there’s no real need to update, but if you want to then here you go.
